Dante and Virgil find themselves still with the thieves in the Eighth Circle of Hell. There has been a change in Virgil since the start of the journey – a metamorphosis in essence. In appearance, Virgil was angry, but now in appearance he has a sweetness about him. He begins to show more of an emotional concern and affection for Dante as they ascend the ruins brought on by the great earthquake in the underworld.
